The Nolan Substitution

A method to decide whether to use who or whom in a sentence by substituting in the pronouns he and him into the sentence.

If the subject can be replaced with he or she, use who; If the question can be answered with him or her, use whom.

The Nolan Substitution method examples

It was for him/her (right)
It was for he/she (wrong)
Whom was it for? (Correct question)

He/she opened the box (correct)
Him/her opened the box (wrong)
Who opened the box (correct question)

zubstitution

Substituting the letter 'z' for an 's' in marketing, or more commonly, rap, to try to sound ultra, only the word is actually pronounced with an ssss and not a zzzz phonetically.

Synonym: Zpelling

scrubstitution

A player substitution at the very end of a basketball game in which one or several low-skilled players (the scrubs) get to enter the game. Generally this happens when the team the scrub is playing for is winning or losing by at least 20 points. Also known as "garbage time."

We're winning by forty points with 30 seconds left. Time for a scrubstitution!
