squelch tail

A burst of noise (a.k.a. "static") heard after a FM radio transmission ends. The random static sound is actually the radio trying to decipher the ambient background noise into meaningful audio. Usually this noise is hidden from the listener with the squelch function on the radio. In typical squelch systems, the audio circuit is turned off if the radio isn't receiving a signal of a certain minimum signal strength. The squelch tail occurs when the transmission has just ended and the radio circuitry doesn't respond quite fast enough. This is remedied by systems like STE or Squelch Tail Elimination by Motorola which send a brief subaudible tone right before the end of the transmission so that the audio circuit turns off before the modulated signal ends. Creative use of CTCSS like turning off the tone generation circuit on a repeater before the repeater tail will work for radios using tone squelch on both transmit and receive.

My VX-150 has a very long squelch tail.

squelcher

can of squelch

an inside joke in the U.S. military played on 'Boots' (newly arrived from boot camp).

squelch is a term used to fine-tune radios. it is a knob or button that controls whether or not background noise is heard on an open channel. it is used when communication is poor or lost and you are scanning your frequency/channel for any recognizable sounds.

telling someone to get a 'can' of squelch sends them to go ask someone, causing everyone who knows the joke to laugh. this is not always wise to send a boot to a Senior NCO for.

0311: hey Boot!

Boot: "Corporal?"

0311: "go down to supply and get a can of squelch. this radio's been acting up all morning and i can't get comm."

Boot goes to supply, waits in line, and then gets yelled at for wasting supply's time and their own. Usually ends with the Boot cleaning something unimaginable or guarding something insignificant for long, long, periods of time.

Squeeshi

adj. Referred to someone or animal after good or bad behavior.

dick squelch

The noise made when you are in the bath and you "take care of yourself" above the water, but some water has got into your foreskin so it squelches, this is usually done instead of below water as the splashing noise usually gives it away, however dick squelches are even more obvious then below water "dick splashes".

"Alex, whats that noise? are you dick squelching" "no mum!"
