Ten years before the main Inuyasha story takes place, they are decapitated by those who fear their power. Naraku revives them in hopes that they can kill Inu-tachi, Kouga, and Sesshoumaru for him.

The -kotsu at the end of each of their name means 'bone', referring to the fact that they were revived after being nothing more than a pile of bones.
