A term used to describe a sub-genre of rock music that has been inspired by original grunge music.

Sadly, many fans of original grunge dislike post grunge music since they feel that post grunge bands have "watered down" their music and made it "radio friendly" or basically in a way sold out to mainstream music. Unfortunately this is somewhat true. Just as with any genre of music, there are bands that are willing to give up their unique musical style and creativity that gives their music it's power just to make it in the music industry. However, this does not apply to all post grunge bands.

A lot of the post grunge sound is simply an evolution in music. Just as grunge was inspired from rock music such as punk and metal, post grunge is an inspiration of grunge music and another genre such as metal, heavy metal, soft rock, blues, etc.......which ever the band would like to use to express themselves.

As long as the band is putting their heart & soul into their music, there is nothing wrong with a post grunge style. Post grunge bands deserve equal respect. Not every person will have the same taste in music.
Grunger 1: Uhhh......I don't like post grunge music. It sounds watered down and mainstream.....like they sold out to the music industry. It's kinda insulting to grunge music.

Grunger 2: Yeah a lot of bands have.....but not all. Some are just incorporating another style of music with good old grunge. Doesn't mean they're compromising the creativity and emotion they put in their music. They're just playing their music in a way that they feel expresses them best. Candlebox, Bush, and Seether are a few of my favorite post grunge bands.

Grunger 1: Hmmm......yeah I think you've got a point there. I'm just not really fond of that particular sound I guess.

Music that would make Kurt Cobain cry.
Bob: Hey, Johnny, what bands are you into?

Johnny: Post-grunge bands like Nickleback, Creed, and Three Days Grace. You know, the good stuff.

Bob: You're a tool.

Johnny: sighs yeahhh

Post-grunge emerged in the mid-90s, and is basically a watered-down, radio-friendly verion of grunge music.
The other definition is wrong. Soundgarden are NOT post-grunge.

post-grunge: Bush, Candlebox, Collective Soul, Foo Fighters, Live, Staind, Creed, Fuel, Godsmack, Nickelback, Puddle of Mudd, Seether etc.

Post-grunge sucks.

Music that killed grunge worse than a bullet to Kurt Cobain's head or Layne Staley's speedball overdose ever could. Post-grunge is a more mainstream version of grunge music, which seems a rather inoffensive thing at first, but contemporary acts such as Puddle of Mudd, Nickelback, Three Doors Down, Godsmack, Staind, Creed and Three Days Grace reveals the genre to be a parody of original grunge. Exaggerated attempts at singing like Eddie Vedder, predictable and formulatic song structures, and insincere angst with no artistic quality are characteristics of post-grunge.
(Listening to typical rock radio station)

Thomas: Hey, this kinda sounds like Alice in Chains, only the guitar sucks, the lyrics are trite, and the singer's vocal range is garbage.

Fred: Yeah, that's Godsmack, another post-grunge act.

The broadest musical category ever. Essentially created for the lazy ass music critics so they don't have to say what specific kind of music a band has.
Person1 - Dude, what's post-grunge?
Person2 - Better question: what's NOT post-grunge?

Unfortunately underrated subgenre of alternative rock that appeared in the mid-'90s. A category of music that is unfarily judged by idiots as comprising only of crappy bands such as Creed and Nickelback, when, in reality, those terrible bands only became popular years after the awesome, original groups of post-grunge bands popped up.

First of all, post-grunge *is* a defined sound. Post-grunge is influenced by grunge, and alternative rock in general, as well as older bands. Its main traits are distorted, grungey guitars and soft verse/hard chorus song patterns, similar to grunge. However, post-grunge is considerably more radio-friendly than grunge, with a cleaner production.

Post-grunge became massively popular throughout the year of 1995, with hit singles from bands such as Bush, Toadies, Silverchair, Foo Fighters, Collective Soul, and more. Post-grunge bands didn't carry the pretentious, fake "anti-fame" attitude exhibited by the original grunge bands, and weren't afraid to create catchy, memorable songs; these songs charted higher on the Billboard Hot 100 and Top 40 charts than any grunge song. By the middle of the year, grunge had faded away, with post-grunge, industrial rock, and alternative rock in general being the new dominant forces on rock radio.

Post-grunge can be very AWESOME, depending on what you're listening to. As long as you avoid Creed and Nickelback, post-grunge is good stuff. Basically, what post bands did was take the grunge sound and sugarcoat it. People claim post-grunge ripped off grunge, but if you wanna go by that token, grunge ripped off just as much from '70/'80s bands, and even Nirvana were almost sued for ripping off a song from Killing Joke. Here's my opinion: If you think a song sounds good, listen to it, and enjoy, regardless of whether or not it's a poppy radio song. Make up your own decision, don't bash something just because it's the 'cool' thing to do.

Recommended songs:
Bush - Everything Zen, Greedy Fly
Silverchair - Israel's Son, Freak
Collective Soul - Gel, Where The River Flows
Seven Mary Three - Cumbersome, Water's Edge
Filter - Hey Man Nice Shot, Jurassitol
Foo Fighters - I'll Stick Around, Monkeywrench
Live - I Alone, Lightning Crashes
Brother Cane - And Fools Shine On
Sponge - Plowed
Toadies - Tyler, Possum Kingdom
Typical grunge snob: LOL, post-grunge sucks!

Some guy: One word: TOADIES.

Typical grunge snob: Oh, yeah... I guess I was just thinking of crappy, fake bands such as Creed and Nickelback, who are terrible representations of what is truely a great sub-genre. I'm gonna go punch myself now, for being so stupid!

Bands that pretty much got signed after the release of nirvana's in utero and pearl jams' vs. Or formed in 1993 or 1994. These bands lacked underground sound and angsty lyrics. Bush was the first succesful post-grunge band not stp. Post-grunge lost popularity in the later 90s. But was mainstream again because of shitty bands like nickleback and creed. But 2000s post-grunge can be good to like three days grace and later seether.
Post-grunge:bush,live,collective soul,foo fighters. Not post-grunge:stp,L7, screeming trees
