A plaid is an article of clothing worn over the left shoulder of a male and worn over the right shoulder of a female and comes from Gaelic ,plaide, "a blanket". Some plaids have a pattern of colours which is correctly referred to as a "tartan". Some plaids worn by the irish have solid colors, one of which is called the "Fringed Fly Plaid" which is saffron in colour, a shade of yellow.
Referring to a tartan, the design on some plaids, as "plaid" is like referring to a checked black and white pattern as a "table cloth" when all table clothes do not necessarily have a checked pattern and checked patterns can appear on skirts, sofas, floor tile and so on!

1) Pertaining to hipster subculture. Derived from previous uses of "collar" to describe class: blue-collar, white-collar, green-collar. Conotes the, perhaps, more mature subsection thereof.
2) Used to describe a class of professionals (after the fashion of white-collar, and blue-collar) who work in fields associated with information, creativity, social-media, etc.
3) Liberal arts majors who manage to get a job where they only wear ties if they feel like it, and with the top button undone.

Hipster 1, "Winston just got a job at the Huffpo as a social-media coordinator."
Hipster 2, "Totally, kewl, joining that plaid-collar workforce."
"Dude, I forgot my rooibos tea, at the new lunch-time yoga studio...man, I'm totally a plaid-collar worker."

Plaid Day, May 18th, is the day where the sheer magnificence and general wonderfulness of plaid is celebrated around the world. Plaid Day is celebrated by wearing plaid on your person. Those who refuse to adorn themselves in the Sacred Flannel are duly sacrificed. Serious Plaidies indulge in tribal plaid face paint and the ceremonial burning of a kilt. Common phrases used on Plaid Day include, "I'm plaid with that," "You're TOTALLY plaiding today," and "That's SO plaid."

An alternative to Black Friday; Plaid Friday encourages people to do their holiday shopping with locally owned and independent businesses the day after Thanksgiving. Created in 2009 in Oakland, CA and adopted in New England in 2010.
E.F. decided to buy all his holiday gifts from his towns independent retailers on Plaid Friday this year, instead of trekking to the mall for Black Friday
