desolate

Desolate describes destruction during natural disasters, like hurricanes and tornadoes. It can also describe empty, lonely places. In addition, it can also mean a sad, lonely, hopeless feeling.
Everyone felt desolate when the tornado destroyed their homes.

Desimilate

The opposite of assimilate. When one desimilates, they revert back to their original culture, often many generations back in time. They regress to their people’s original culture, despite every logical conclusion leading to them more assimilated, not less. This regression, or “desimilation”, often includes relearning a previously lost language, and foregoing the luxuries that a normal assimilated person would have in their life.

For example, if a Canadian boy were to go from playing in a heavy metal band, spending $15 on coffee a day, getting free corporate hockey tickets from his dad, and eating bagels for breakfast at his sisters restaurant - to speaking a foreign language, dating immigrant women, and hanging out at the “banya” - he would have desimilated.
Wow! That boy sure has desimilated 3-5 generations.
