Homo pecus individuals are optimized for labor, power generation collected from them in the form of taxation and usury, contributing to the economic and energy systems of the empire through collective, herd-like behavior. While genetically similar to homo sapiens, they are intellectually and behaviorally distinct from homo sapiens, homo pecus shares a common evolutionary lineage with homo techno, diverging in their role as passive consumers or recipients of technological outputs, rather than creators or programmers of technology.

In the dystopian novel, society has been divided into two classes: the ruling elite and the subservient Homo pecus, who are engineered for compliance and labor.
