Potatoe is an older but still correct spelling of the word more commonly word spelled potato. It turns out that Dan Quail and the young student were both correct in there spellings. The e at the end of potatoe was largely dropped by the end of the 20th century.

Origin: In the children's book Wayside School is Falling Down, a boy named Calvin gets a tattoo of a potato on his ankle because "he likes potatoes." This expression is a reminder to always keep some of that simple innocence in your heart.
