Harlem

Harlem is a part of Manhattan located ABOVE 125th st. and BELOW 165th st. It has historically been the home of African-Americans and peoples of African decent. Harlem is best known for the jazz, poetry, and art that came out of the Harlem Renaissance. Important figures of Harlem include: Langston Hughes, W.E.B DuBois, Ella Fitzgerald.

Harlem has also been seen as a dangerous place to people who reside below 96th st and really most places outside of Manhattan. Trust me, It's not.

I took the A train to 125th and got off in Harlem. (Duke Ellington's song "A Train" is all about this).

harlem shake

An eccentric upper body dance move that involves the shaking of the upper torso and shoulders. The Harlem Shake originated on 125th and Lexington where gang bangers would shoot unsuspecting cripples with crutches. The staggering fall of these cripples created a signature move, adapted by gang-affiliates and introduced at local parties. Upon witnessing the newly created “Harlem Shake,” a corporate thug under the Bad Boy Entertainment payroll reenacted and sold this dance to famous choreographer Laurie Ann Gibson who introduced this dance with the video premier “Let’s Get It” by P. Diddy featuring G-Dep and Black Rob. The phenomenon sweeping white neighborhoods and Italian nightclubs across the country was born… the Harlem Shake.

Harlequin Fetus

Harlequin fetus refers to an extremly rare genetic disorder that affects the formation of skin. Skin is ridged cracked and hardened, forming plates. Since these plates cannot flex deep cracks form allowing infection to penetrate the skin immediatly upon birth. The disorder distorts the facial features and constricts the digits. Harlequin fetuses are either stillborn or die very soon after birth.

Mothers with a family history of the disease are screened during the early months of pregnancy, pregnancies affected by it are terminated.

Genetic disorders, such as Harlequin Fetus, that affect the way we look have and will always evoke fear and revulsion, it's written into our DNA along with the rest of our reflexes and instincts.

We do not, however have to provoke this ourselves by turning images of the effects of genetic disorders into freak shows.
