On Facebook, RSVPing "maybe" to an event that one will not attend, so as not to hurt the feelings of the event's creator.

It's a solid maybe I'll be there, a soft perhaps... a wishful yes. On second thought, I can't make it. I have bowling that night.

A phrase used when talking about foster children that the foster parents are attempting to adopt but it's not offical yet. This is a much warmer and fun way of communicating a person is trying adopt the children yet still conveys it's not a done deal yet.

a way of rejecting an offer to go out or do something fun, because you are too nice or care to much about the person to say "no". The odds of a Santiago Maybe actually ending up as a yes is about 1%, and may require the use of extortion and moderate physical threats.
"Hey, wanna go get drinks tonight?"
(a Santiago maybe:) "mmmm, maybe, i still have quite a lot of reading to do for next years spring semester, i'll let you know"
