The shooting occurred in the morning outside an entrance to the New York Hilton Midtown hotel. Brian was in the city to attend an annual investors' meeting for UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare. Prior to his death, he faced criticism for the company's rejection of insurance claims, & his family reported that he had received death threats in the past. The suspect, described as a white man wearing a mask, fled the scene. On 12/ 9, 2024, cops arrested 26-year-old Luigi Mangione in Altoona, Pennsylvania, & charged him with Brian's murder in a Manhattan court.

The suspect arrived in New York City on 11/ 24, 2024, via Greyhound bus. The bus route began in Atlanta, Georgia, but cops don't know from which city or town he boarded. As he was walking along West 54th Street toward the Hilton he was shot from behind by an assailant

The ghost gun consists of a 3D-printed lower receiver, metal slide, Glock 19 internals from a parts kit, & uses a standard Glock magazine. The 3D-printed part's design was an iteration of "FMDA 19.2", a design released in 2021 by the libertarian group Deterrence Dispensed.
