It is a compliment and an insult at the same time. Can be like a no offence call. It can also use sarcasm.

I installed Norton a few years ago, but now that I'm trying to delete it, I've found I have a serious case of computer herpes.

The correct and original, but unfortunately obsolete, English spelling of the word most commonly spelt now as competitor.
