graduation jollies

The feeling of complete and utter euphoria brought on by graduating from college. Often elicits bouts of binge drinking, screaming, fist-pumping and general insanity.

When I got out of my last final exam as a college student, I felt the weight of the world lifted off my shoulders. It was as if I had been finally set free from a lifetime of servitude. I started sprinting through campus just for the hell of it. When I got home I ate a whole tub of ice cream, downed three bottles of whiskey, and then slept for three straight days. I didn't realize it at the time, but apparently I had contracted an acute case of graduation jollies.

jolliday

Jolliday is a non-official holiday celebrated on the last weekend of February each year. Every 5th year is a leap year and will be celebrated on the first weekend of March. Jolliday was created by friends, known as the Urban Family, in Somerville, MA in January, 2002. It is a celebration of friendship, family, community, sharing, laughter and high fives. Jolliday is now celebrated annually in the U.S. by more than eighty people in seven states and the District of Columbia.

Festivities include a Friday night out, starting at the Beacon Hill Pub (BHP), and a Saturday party located in the Greater Boston area (Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, or Brookline). Traditional garments for the occasion include; orange & purple shirts, & blue jeans to be worn all weekend. Though called Jolliday, it is actually celebrated for an entire weekend, and people flock to Greater Boston to celebrate.

jello shots

Jello shots are cubes or cups of jello containing
some sort of liquor.

- 1 6-ounce package of gelatin (flavored or unflavored -- you decide)
- 16 ounces (2 cups) boiling water
- 6 ounces cold water
- 10 ounces 80-proof Alcohol

In a bowl, mix boiling water with the powdered gelatin until fully dissolved.
Give it at least a minute to fully activate the gelatin.
Let gelatin cool for five or ten minutes to reduce alcohol vapor loss.
Stir in cold water and alcohol.
A tray of jello shots prior to refrigeration.
Pour resulting mixture into shot glasses or plastic cups
