In the trading posts of the old west, the shopkeeper measured out a yard on his wooden counter and inserted two brass thumbtacks. He used this to measure off "yard goods" such as fabrics and rope. So to set the price he first had to get down to brass tacks.

A state of extreme, unforeseen, and sudden anger. A reference to the disposition of a canine while it is completing the unfortunate task of expelling tacks from its rectum. The dog is extremely upset and can't figure what exactly is going on or how it happened. Used in the North American Deep South.
