A DUFF doesn't actually have to be fat or ugly, just less attractive than the people they are with

Also, a person can be one of the hottest in one group of friends, and the least hot (and therefore the Duff) in an other group

The duff is the less attractive friend and therefore easier to talk to than the hotter friend you are trying to score
