Not to be confused with "Hip Pop" garbage that one can hear daily on MTV, or the local radio.
If you'll notice, nearly all the definitions have about half of the votes in favor (thumbs up) and half against (thumbs down).
Rap is very polarizing. Some people love it and some hate it. Some will say it's poetry over a beat, some think they're very clever and say something retarded like "Can't spell crap without rap" or "Retards Attempting Poetry".
The point is...people who endlessly hate on rap for invalid reasons are wrong because they're idiots. And people who endlessly defend rap are idiots for thinking they can convince those other idiots otherwise.
People who just listen to rap, or metal, or both, and go about their shit like usual are cool.
More power to you.

Faggoty Metal Head: Rap is crap!
Elitist self-anointed rap connoisseur: Dude, you need to listen to real rap!
(three hours later)

Elitist self-anointed rap connoisseur: Have you even heard of (Insert: some underground artist nobody knows)?!?!
Roommate who's tired of his friends' shit: Both of you are fucking idiots. Shut the fuck up!

Rap is what the majority of the public just has to bag on because they just took a gander at MTV and listened to Lil Wayne's new song(s). Look, if you think rap is crap, you are thinking this because your ass just got off the MTV channel. Rap is NOT Lil Wayne. Rap is NOT Soulja Boy. Rap is NOT Plies. Rap is NOT Rick Ross (for the loss). Rap is Tupac. Rap is Biggie. Rap is Eminem. Rap is Big L. Rap is Nas. Rap is Immortal Technique. But of course, none of you ignorant fucks probably know who these guys are or heard a single verse from them right?
Rap is the art of using your voice as a rhythmic instrument instead of a melodic instrument.
It is looked down upon, especially by the rock and metal community, because it "doesn't require instruments" or "it's all talk and no play". They say "anyone can write something that rhymes over a shitty bass beat easy".
Rap is not that easy.
If you ever took the fucking time to put down the guitar and get to know some REAL Emcees, you would know rap requires 50x more lyrical talent and flow and purpose than Soulja Shit or Lil Wayne.
Rap requires a pen, some paper, and a mind of a man/woman that wants to tell a story to the world. One that wants to tell it how it is to him or her.
It has NOTHING to do with the gangsters. It has NOTHING to do with money. It has NOTHING to do with hoes.
It's all what comes to mind when you want to tell people something. What do you want to show?
Who said rap HAS to be about bling and stacks of green? Who said rap HAS to be about bein' da BOSS?
Who said rap HAS to be about getting shot?
Who said rap HAS to be about the hood?
Who said rap HAS to have gangs in it?
RAP IS A MUSIC GENRE TOO. IT SHOULD DESERVE AS MUCH PRAISE AS ROCK, METAL, COUNTRY, OPHREA, BLUES, SOUL, HIP HOP, AND EVEN DEATH METAL!!!!

A Music Genre of speaking Poetry over a beat. Used to have a meaning but nowadays doesnt have a meaning at all. Nobody ever raps anymore they just talk over the mic, Eminem, T.I., Nas, and Jay-Z, Royce da 5'9, Wu Tang Clan, Lupe Fiasco, and Dr. Dre may be the only real rappers left, Lil Wayne and Soulja Boy just straight up killed it.
Eminem and all of Shady Records (excluding 50 Cent), Rakim, 2Pac, Biggie, Jay-Z, Nas, T.I., Wu-Tang Clan, Snoop Dogg, Big Pun, Lupe Fiasco, Dr. Dre, Eazy E, Royce Da 5'9, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, LL Cool J, Big L, Nate Dogg, Esham, Xzibit, DMX, UGK, Ice-T, Bone Thugs, Kurupt, Ice Cube, Redman, Scarface and all of the Geto Boys are all real rap. But only 20% of that list is still in the game.
Lil Wayne, Drake, Ja Rule, Soulja Boy, Nelly, Paul Wall, Insane Clown Posse, Hurricane Chris, Flo Rida, Pitbull, Black Eyed Peas, Kid Cudi and Sean Kingston are all commercialized mainstream rap that doesnt have any talent whatsoever and they are all I hear about with the dumbass kids at my school.

A modern style of music characterized by fast rhythmic rhyming backed by a drum beat. Lyrics are often explicit. Choruses are often slower than verses. Some popular rappers are Eminem, Lil Wane, Jay-z and Snoop Dog. Rap music is often pointless and a waste of time. You can barely understand the lyrics and every song sounds the same. Rap has no depth to it it's just some guy talking fast with a beat. Rockis real music not rap. Rap is crap music. Long live ROCK!!!!!

Well-known and popular form of music. Rappers are people who want to get rich but can't sing, so they just talk fast and say it's 'beats.' A vast majority of rap is about hoes, drugs, drinking, more hoes, but a small variety isn't, which is generally of higher quality. Loved by teenage douchebags who think they're 'cool' by listening.

Rap~Retards Attempting Poetry.
More seriously, it's a combination of simple fast vocals choc-full of expletives and short beats.
