spoonerism

A word or phrase created by swapping the initial letters (or first consonant sounds) of two words or syllables to get a new word word or phrase. The spelling doesn't have to be correct, only the pronounciation is important. The term "spoonerism" was named after Reverend W.A. Spooner (1844-1930).

Not to be confused with anagrams, palindromes, and other word games.

- "Peas and carrots" is a spoonerism of "keys and parrots"
- "tea bags" becomes "bee tags"
- "trail mix" becomes "mail tricks"
- "Save the whales" becomes "wave the sails"
- "forearm" becomes "oar farm"

Exclamation that describes displeasure on the part of the speaker due to something being distasteful or otherwise sickening or displeasurable. From valspeak, so somewhat archaic. Usage these days is considered silly.

Oh, gag me with a spoon! Look at the zits all over that nerd's face!

Spoon

A spoon is an imaginary unit of energy used by people with illnesses and disabilities. These people use spoons to describe daily activites with a limited source of energy.

The Spoon Theory was developed by Christine Miserandino, a woman with Lupus to describe units of energy to her friend. She gave her friend a handful and asked her friend to list her morning routine. As each activity was said, a spoon was removed from the handful.

For example, getting out of bed costs "one spoon", and getting dressed/showering costs two or three.

I didn't have enough spoons to do the dishes AND shower before bed.

spoonfeed

v.

1) to give out information in an overly obvious, even patronizing manner. Done intentionally for the purpose of being rude, or perhaps done by a teacher too lazy to engage his/her students in discussion (by attempting to prevent discussion by leaving no room for speculation). Done unintentionally by people simply trying to be clear (I'm toeing the line right now, lol), or by those who don't understand the power of understatement. When such behavior is comical--see captain obvious

2) Telling people only what they want to hear, or only what you want them to hear, aka, disguising opinion as fact.

Not to be confused with spoonfed, which refers to those who are unable to care for themselves physically or mentally and so must rely on others. Derogatory.

1) Example:
Customer: So, what's wrong with my car?
Mechanic: Well, there seems to be a problem with a differential...differentials are sets of gears that...
Customer: Hey, no need to spoonfeed me, sir. Just give me the facts.

2)Think back on all the political speeches you've ever heard or polit. editorials you've read. Remember the ones telling you to 'take heart in the current crisis, and stand strong, because America is God's country and we WILL triumph over evil'?
