Due to a basketball (or weightlifting) accident (reports differ), his upper incisors were knocked out, so his upper canines appeared to be very large, not unlike Count Dracula's. At first, he wore dentures while playing. Eventually, he realized his visage without dentures (downright monstrous) matched his play, and added to his abilities in intimidating opposing offenses. His intensity and intimidation are a bit of contrast to the cerebral play of team-mate and fellow HOFer Jack Ham, aka "Dobre Shunka."
