Churchill, surveying Bessie, replied, "And might I say, Mrs. Braddock, you are ugly, and what’s more, disgustingly ugly.


But tomorrow," Churchill added, "I shall be sober."

Sober, in a literal sense, is to be void of the influence of any intoxicating agents like alcohol, for example.

However, it is often used (satirically) to replace the word drunk in places and situation where it would be wise to avoid explicitly stating one's intention to become intoxicated.
