A phrase coined by the anthropologist Rene Girard to explain why your best friend is trying to steal your boyfriend from you.

Also known as triangulation of desire.
Mimetic desire, the desire for what somebody else has or wants, accounts for why I really want to go out with a guy that a lot of other girls find attractive.
