A man or a woman who is sexually attracted to children or under-age people.

Pedophilia is a mental disorder, rather than a sexual orientation or a personal sexual choice. Generally, a man or a woman cannot decide to be sexually attracted to children or not, however they are responsible for handling their attraction responsibly and not engaging any child or under-age person in sexual activity.

Pedophilia is not commonly associated with men that are attracted to very attractive, physically mature and extremely well-developed teenage girls, as that is just considered attraction for the sake of being attracted to someone young and good-looking. This is not always the case, though.

Lesher was currently in an anonymous group that dealt with keeping sexual desire towards children to oneself, and not exploring any child sexually, as he is a pedophile.

Contrary to the "definition" by TruthAboutPedophilia on this site, pedophilia is indeed a mental disorder (just check the DSM). It is a disorder to be attracted to small children! He/She also claims that there must be a distinction between the attraction and the act. But first of all, the attraction is a warning sign that something is fundamentally wrong with the individual, and secondly the statistics show that the vast majority of people with pedophile leanings, and/or who traffick in and consume ped. porn, at some point do molest children. And that is a crime that can never be undone!!

A pedophile may convince themselves they are showing a child love, when all they're doing is destroying their innocence and trust!

It seems most of the definitions on here are accurate, but just to clear some things up:

A "pedophile", according to the American Psychological Association and by it's very definition is: Someone, who for a period of 6 months or more, has arousing fantasies, urges, or feelings towards prepubescent children. The APA states that the person must be at least 16 or older, however there have been cases where younger teens have been diagnosed with "warning signs" that may indicate an unnatural sexual attraction.

Which means is that:
1) The sexual attraction towards young teens (13-17 yr olds) is in a completely different category known as ephebophilia. (The age of consent does not apply because it includes pubescent teens)

2) The words pedophile and child molester are not synonymous in that "pedophilia" describes the sexual attraction whereas "child molester" describes the sexual abuse. Furthermore, studies show that many child molesters aren't even attracted to children, which is why molestation is considered more of a power crime rather than a sex crime. In other words, many pedophiles do not abuse children, and many child molesters have no sexual interest in children - which is why they are two separate words.
(A molested child is not a victim of "pedophilia", he/she is a victim of "child molestation" - even if pedophilic urges led to the act.)

1) Bill just admitted to me today that he's a pedophile. I can't believe he's attracted to children, I hope he seeks help.

Someone who has sex with pre-pubescent children. Not to be confused with a pederast. As an historical note, the ancient Greek (Homeric-Platonic) ideal was NOT pedophilia, but pederasty, specifically gay pederasty.

Ex: When Plato writes (Symposium 192 B-C) "a man of this sort is at any rate born to be a lover of boys or the willing mate of a man, eagerly greeting his own kind," he is talking about a grown man and a teenage boy, which is pederasty, not pedophilia.
