Someone that is an enemy of your enemy and a friend of you one day, then is an friend of your enemy and and an enemy of you the next, to get a different perspective.
He/she had been shifty long enough that it made some people think that he/she was just pretending to be their friends while looking carefully for a spot to place their dagger. Someone is simply either your friend or your enemy.

Compromise

Letting someone else get the best of you to keep life on an even keel.
Not everybody had a 6th grade version of themselves that would kick the shit out of the adult version of themselves comromising everything, some people had a 6th grade version of themselves that wanted to become rich and powerful enough to force everyone else to compromise everything.
The pandemic is nowhere near unbearable, so if it lasts longer because of people not getting vaccinated, it lasts longer. It's already lasted over a year, nobody that hasn't gotten a vaccine is in a hurry.
There is nothing unbearable about the pandemic. It is a pestilence perpetuated by pests, that's about it.

Neighborhood

Where you're from.
It wasn't just his neighborhood, it was anybody's that was originally from the neighborhood, but as one of many people originally from the neighborhood, it was also his neighborhood, and he knew who's neighborhood it was, and who's neighborhood it never was, and never would be.

New life

People don't want new life breathed into something, they were happy enough with their old dysfunctional abnormal lives.
His/her old life was a life he/she was already happy with, and didn't need new life.

Better half

If you marry someone that really is your equal, neither of you has one, but that doesn't seem to sit well with most females. Better isn't equal.
Married males are told all the time they have a better half. Not everybody agrees with that viewpoint, but if they want to go along with it just to be with someone, that's their business.
You'd have to have a tremendous amount of respect for someone to allow yourself to do it.
The guy didn't tap out of everything for just anybody, since he wasn't a doormat.
