backpack

A form of hip-hop music that is socially conscious. Emphasis is placed upon the lyrics and beat production, usually inspired by the world around the producer/rapper. Few artists adopt the style for fear of being seen as nerdy, but it is far from that.

Common, Kanye West and Talib Kweli all make backpack rap.

Pronounced "kwah", kwe is a word used to define a close-friend you deeply respect. Derived from Talib Kweli, famous backpack rapper, only true vatos use it.

ice rap

A derogatory term for mainstream rap and "hip-hop". Songs in this genre define themselves as truly hip-hop when they are far from it. Rhymes consist mostly of talking about money, hoes and rims - boasting tracks basically, but they fail to pull it off quite as well as the likes of Run DMC due to ALL of their songs being FULL of the same subject. The complete opposite of backpack rap.
