ALE

Automatic Link Establishment (station)

In high-frequency (HF) radio, the capability of a station to make contact, or initiate a circuit, between itself and another specified radio station, without human intervention and usually under emergency conditions. ALE stations are generally computer-controlled.
The Air Force has ALE frequencies in the 11 and 19 MHz bands.

DX

Radio term for "extended distance".
What "extended distance" really is could be 100 miles, 1000 miles, 10,000 miles, it is pretty grey as to an exact number or distance.
11-meter pirate radio operators use the frequency of 27.555 MHz (27555.0 kHz) for DX calling.

The transferring of images, usually or hard-copy documents, via telephone lines to another device that can recieve and interpret the images.

SOS is the morse code version

MAYDAY is reconized internationally as an emergency code on any type of radio system, and should be taken seriously.

Apollo 13

Less then one year after man first walked on the moon Apollo 13 was simply a "routine" flight until a faulty thermostat caused an oxygen canister to explode, blowing an entire side of the spacecraft away, the ship eventally starts leaking oxygen and the crew (Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise) have to survive in the Lunar Module until they can safely make it back to earth. But they didn't get to play with moom rocks.
