Squid jigging, dory repair, and flannel mending are the other sources of both income and entertainment, although a hockey rink is scheduled for completion in 2017.
The town was founded in 1876 by a group of Scottish curlers who saw the area's rocks as a source of curling stones but the pebbling was unfortunately dextro-rotary so the stones were only good for anti-podean usage.

Get the Bronwyn Baymug. place. Canadian "city" solidly cemented to Edmonton's rock-strewn flank . Devoid of pretensions, quarries and night life, Stony Plain has been poised to be "the next big thing" in Upper West Central Alberta for over 125 years. Churches, bingo halls, outdoor tractor pulls, indoor gravel assessment bazaars, and a squeegee factory slated for opening in 2014, are all bringing unwanted attention to the area which is quietly trying to slide into the yielding topsoil.
Hockey, soccer and table tennis are all sports watched on TV in Stony Plain where HBO is just a dream.

Get the Stony Plainmug. n. Oxymoronicly named period alluding to the daylight hours prior to Christmas Eve. Quite an acceptable coinage despite the objections of some opinionated pedants. An alternate etymology comes from the traditions of the Armenian Orthodox church which speak of the Bethlehem innkeeper's wife, Evangelina, who convinced her husband to allow Mary to give birth in their stable. A feast day in her honour was declared on the day preceding Christmas. Christmas Eve Day, a time for quiet contemplation and fasting, is still celebrated in Asia Minor and much of Central Alberta.

A word created in homage to Gualtiero Jacopetti, the recently deceased Italian director of Mondo Cane, a movie whose title inspired people who largely didn't speak Italian or Latin to create a variety of parodizing phrases, viz; Mondo Druggo, Mondo Tempo etc.

Get the track meatmug. n. a person who protests any injustice, usually with a high degree of enthusiasm or zealotry. Originally applied only to people protesting the constraints of the Roman Catholic Church it is now, in a kind of protest, applicable to other causes. The word "protestation" has , of course, never been constrained.
