Dashboard is invoked by pressing F12 (default, can be changed in System Preferences) or by clicking on the Dashboard icon in the dock. They are meant to provide quick access to frequently used information, often live updated from the internet. For example, Apple includes a world clock, a flight tracker and a calculator, among others. Hundreds are available for download around the internet. See also Konfabulator, a similar system which predated the launch of OS X 10.4.
