a little carribbean nation, the brits and french fought over control of this place for over 300 years until the 20th century. apparently, the good sugar and bannana growing areas were a big prize. nowadays, this is just a toruist trap for americans, canadians, and euros. it has the world's biggest drive-up volcano.

marshall islands

tiny country in the pacific made up of hundreds of islands. a british sailor named marshall founded the place for westerners, but the germans gained the islands in the 1800s. japan basically used it as 1 giant military base during wwii, and it became a us mandate after the war. it gained independence only 25 years ago, after the us grew tired of using it as 1 big nuke testing ground.

one of the east african countries known for safaris. a long time german colony, it was highly unstable during this time period. the british eventually took over. since independence, things haven't gone well. the nation has seen a marxist dictatorship and an unstable, mostly for-show, democracy and various wars with neighboring lands.
tanzania is where al queda bombed a us embassy in 1998.

poorest country in the world, sitting in a very rural and rugged part of africa. nobody from the outside world knew the region existed til the mid-1800s. the french exploited this place until the 1950s. since then it's been extremely unstable.

the country in africa where the slave trade originated from over 500 years ago. the portuguese colonized this place until a bloody civil war in the 1950s. the nation then saw several coups, autocratic governments, and a long civil war in the 1990s. ginnea-bissau is most famous for ruler kumba yala's attempts to move the capital. in a deplorably poor country, yala spent a fortune attempting to build the small rural village where he was born into a grand capital.
