domestic violence

Something a sicko does to their spouse because they are taking their anger out at them. Usually involves blood and bruises and all that. Men are more likely to be the attacker. One woman dies every week from domestic violence in Australia and one man dies every month from domestic violence.

Hyper-Violence

Usually used to describe depictions or actions that are overtly graphic in the representation of violence. Used in relation to media that offers a preponderance of violence over any other element in the narrative. The term is used equally in relation to sexual violence, often to imply a sublimated sexual motivation for the violence. The term is synonymous with the term Ultra-Violence, which arises from "A Clockwork Orange" by Anthony Burgess.

Perhaps the extreme hyper-violence reflects Spain's old scars re-imagined by a Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro, but it held me away from falling into the magic realism of the story.
