Emo isn't about the look at all, it's started to be now but many are just posers, emo is an old music genre-an offshot of punk/post hardcore. But since some lazy reviewers have started calling pop-rock emo it's got worse.
Self expression features heavily and is a good thing to do esp. through art, poems and songs. The "Self-harm" can be for various reasons; a common one is distraction from emotional pain because for all physical pain emotionally it can be so much worse. Others, due to a fragile state of mind need to be reminded that the're still alive in a droning and all-to-painful world.
But if you really think it's about fashion (well the streo-typed fashion); i'm a guy with long blonde *curly* hair, not emo, i wear whatever i feel like and never vans etc., not emo, i hate streo-typed emo music,not emo.
So yeah, after all that i'm known as an emo, i don't label myself as due to stereo-types i am many things-none of which are emo.

emo=emotional,and not afraid of expressing these emotions.
people who hate emos are just bitter and have no real reason for hating us at all.
there are so many stereotypes about emos that arent even true!
not all emos have an emo fringe!
not all emos are bisexual or gay!
not all emos slit their wrists!
people who stereotype are ignorant and they usualy have never even met any emos.
some things me and other emos i know wear:
*drainpipe jeans
*converses
*polka-dots
*stripes
*checks
*pumps
*band tshirts and hoodys
*studded belt
emos usually listen to 'emo/screamo' bands like lost prophets and from first to last.
people who say they hate emo music usually havent even heard any!
they just judge it because its 'emo' and they think everything 'emo' is crap.
i know what i'm talking about because i am emo and i have spoken to loads of people who say they hate emo and when i ask them if they know any emos the usual answer is 'no' and they have usually never even listened to any emo music at all they just decided to hate emos for no reason, just to be stupid, people who hate emos are usually preps/chavs/jocks/scallys and norms even some metalheads.

People who cut themselfs because they hate their life or are sad. Being emo is a serious medical issue and shouldn't be joked about because people actually do cut themself when they're in a stage of depression. If you see cuts on someones wrists try to help them and if you're emo please seek attion because people love you.
