crash diet

a diet plan that entails foregoing one's usual meal regimen and replacing it with a substantially meeker allowance of nutriment. Usually such diets last a few days to a week and are implemented prior to an upcoming event that the dieter wants to lose weight for.

Such practices can be unsafe, especially if done frequently, over a longer period of time, or without the appropriate intake of water and nutrients.
I started a crash diet on wednesday so I can fit into my prom dress this weekend.

Stephanie passed out on the field and had to be taken to a hospital; she had been on a crash diet and was undernourished.

Fogey/fogy /fougi/ sl. (early 18C+, orig. Scot) old-fashioned, stuck-in-the mud.
Person with old fashioned ideas which he is unwilling to change: Come to the disco and stop being such an old fogey!
You think me an old fogeyand an old tory, his thoughtful voice said. I saw three generations since O’Connel’s time. I remember the famine. Do you know that the orange lodges agitated for repeal of the union twenty years before O’Connel did or before the prelates of your communion denounced him as a demagogue? You fenians forget some things. (James Joyce, Ulysses. Penguin Books,1992. p. 38)
