Anita Bryant

a bitch.
there's really no more to say.

but here's some background: she was very against gay people based on really horrible ridiculous reasons. she felt like she was on such a high horse because of her Christianity. her preach was one of many organized religious people: God loves everyone. everyone in the world, including Gay people. he just wants us to get rid of you. he wants us to kill you.
I hate Anita Bryant. Let's cheer against her! Anita, you liar, we'll set your hair on fire! Woo. Ah, it's good to cheer your feelings :]

Anita Bryant

An infamous fundamentalist Christian singer, one-time model and spokesperson for Florida Orange Juice. Known today as the mother of the gay bashing movement.

Her heyday was during the late 1970s, when she began one long tirade about gays and lesbians, trying to repeal anti-discrimination policies. "Save our children", "homosexuals can't reproduce, so they recruit", "homosexuals sleeping with little boys", and on and on with the disgusting stereotypes about gays and lesbians.

Basically, a backstabbing whore who used religion and her position to pander to public fears and to spread her vitriol and slander lesbians and gay men.
"As a mother, I know that homosexuals cannot biologically reproduce children; therefore, they must recruit our children" and "If gays are granted rights, next we'll have to give rights to prostitutes and to people who sleep with St. Bernards and to nail biters."
-Anita Bryant

To this day, gays and lesbians cannot adopt, or marry, in Florida because of the harpy known as Anita Bryant. Because of her, the Reagan years and the Religious Right are still felt.

Thankfully, she fell from grace after a boycott of Florida Orange Juice, a boycott which many celebrities joined, forced her removal. Bryant's marriage ended in 1980 and has filed for bankruptcy in recent years, half-forgotten by the public.

A co-founder of the Religious Right - a conservative, Christian, political movement in the United States that began in the late 1970s and continues to the present day.

Politically to the Right of more traditional evangelicals like the Rev. Billy Graham

Led a political crusade against homosexuality in the late 1970s that killed her career, while simultaneously opening the door for the Moral Majority - Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell - into mainstream politics.

Bryant is largely responsible for the ascendancy of Ronald Reagan to the White House in 1980.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Bryant had been a model, a singer and an Florida orange juice spokesperson.

A largely unsung martyr for the Christian Right in the U.S. and arguably the most effective political spokeswoman in the past 30 years.
Anita Bryant turned fear of homosexual child molesters into an artform.

Without Anita Bryant's "Save Our Children" campaign during Jimmy Carter's first term, Carter may have had a chance at a second term.
