YAC Bounce

A quick, cheap technique adding the impression of motion to otherwise static animation or posed illustrations.

YAC Bounces are a result of digital animation becoming accessible; Instead of redrawing, animators save time by warping an existing frame using software tools. Done subtly, it almost passes as real motion, but once noticed, they look off.

To add a YAC Bounce, duplicate the final frame of movement, and skew the now second-to-last frame in the direction of implied motion. The result is a quick, flicker-y overshoot before a pose settles.

While the technique was possible since early digital animation and compositing, and has occasionally appeared in early Flash cartoons, it gained real popularity around 2016-2020 in the YouTube storytime community. Fans of larger content creators began making videos, often imitating the techniques their idols (JaidenAnimations, Domics, TonyvToons, etc) used. Eventually, the Young Animators Club, "YAC," began; a community spanning a website, YouTube, Amino, and Discord where fans interacted regularly. YAC Bounces, among other techniques, became signature across the community. YAC itself faded after YouTube's COPPA changes blocked comments on their videos (How people found and joined the community), though the Discord technically still exists.
