The Smiths Trick

"The Smiths Trick" is used when songwriters apply positive lyrics to a sad instrumental and the other way round. This term referrs to british band The Smiths who often sing dark and depressive words to "happy" major chord structures.
Dude 1: "Dude, have you listened to the new song by How To Loot Brazil? I just read the lyrics, are they changing their style and go all happy now?"
Dude 2: "Are you kiddin' me? The song is so dark and mellow, these fellas just applied The Smiths Trick!"
