Teufelslied

The ”Devil’s Song” (German: Teufelslied), also known as “SS Marschiert in Feindesland” (English: The SS marches in enemy land) was a military march of the Nazis’ Waffen-SS during the German invasion of the Soviet Union in World War 2. The music of this song came from the “Lied der Legion Condor” (English: Song of the Condor Legion), a march dedicated to the Condor Legion, a military unit sent by Nazi Germany to fight for the Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War. A marching song with the same melody as the Lied der Legion Condor was adopted by the Charlemagne French SS Division, the Estonian SS Division, the Latvian Legion and the Norwegian Legion during the war. Despite its association with Nazi terror and atrocities, the song was adopted after the war by Brazil as a march of their Paratroopers Brigade (Portuguese: Brigada de Infantaria Paraquedista), and a march used by the modern Bundeswehr (specifically their Airborne Division whose nickname is “the Green Devils”) of the Federal Republic of Germany, “Green Devil” (German: Grüne Teufel) has the same melody but replaced with different lyrics.

The song remains popular among many Neo-Nazis, and is also commonly associated with the real time strategy game Heart Of Iron 4’s The New Order mod, under the name “Burgund Erwacht” (English: Burgundy Awake).
SS marschiert in Feindesland
Und singt ein Teufelslied.
Ein Schütze steht am Wolgastrand
Und leise summt er mit,
Wir pfeifen auf unten und oben
Und uns kann die ganze Welt
Verfluchen oder auch loben
Grad wie es ihnen gefällt. - Excerpt from the song’s lyrics.
