HOO-HAH DAY--An annual rite observed to mourn the passage of summer. Celebrated in northwest Suffolk County, Long Island NY. Festivities begin after sundown and take place on rooftops of suburban homes. HOO-HAH! is the proper greeting for the occasion, accompanied with the raising of ones hat off the head, or, if no hat is worn, mimicking the gesture with your hand. The phrase is also often hollered appropos of nothing, followed by smacking the head of the person nearest to you. It is considered an act of honor to invent a new beverage for the occasion, although iced tea and lemonade are favorites. Heavy comsumption of alcoholic beverages is by no means traditional but always encouraged. The late author James Thurber is the patron saint of the holiday, and his short story "The Night the Bed Fell" is deemed sacred text for the general confusion and disorder essential to this holiday.

The word "hoohah" was a running gag in the early years of Mad, often exclaimed by characters in the comic book issues written and edited by Harvey Kurtzman. Its somewhat Eastern European feel was a perfect fit for the New York Jewish style of the magazine. Kurtzman liked using Yiddish expressions and nonsense words to humorous effect, and the very first story in the first issue of Mad was even titled "Hoohah!" The word's precise origin is unknown, although it may have sprung from the Hungarian word for "wow," which is hűha 1).

"Women! What can you say? Who made 'em? God must have been a fuckin' genius. The hair... They say the hair is everything, you know. Have you ever buried your nose in a mountain of curls... just wanted to go to sleep forever? Or lips... and when they touched, yours were like... that first swallow of wine... after you just crossed the desert. Tits. Hoo-hah! Big ones, little ones, nipples staring right out at ya, like secret searchlights. Mmm. Legs. I don't care if they're Greek columns... or secondhand Steinways. What's between 'em... passport to heaven. I need a drink. Yes, Mr Sims, there's only two syllables in this whole wide world worth hearing: pussy. Hah! Are you listenin' to me, son? I'm givin' ya pearls here." - Lt. Col. Frank Slade
