White knights are people who offer help to others—motivated by classic virtue signaling. White knights most commonly virtue signal to benefit women, often with unconscious hopes that they'll ultimately end up getting a relationship or even sex for doing so. But there is a fair amount of white knighting done by men superficially defending other perceived inferior or weaker people (even possibly other men), such as politicians white knighting to insincerely "protect" minorities just in order to get their votes whether the minorities actually need the protection or not. Judges will often white knight to help women win in divorce cases against men even without evidence that the woman has actually been wronged in any way.
When Randy Newman wrote "Short People", most of the protests about the song were from tall people; most of the short people actually understood what the song was all about, but still the taller people tended to white knight against the song for them anyway.
