Dynamist materialism holds that matter contains within itself the potential for all the forms, complexities, and novelties that emerge in the universe—not through external design or imposition, but through the unfolding of inherent possibilities. The dynamist materialist sees evolution not as random variation plus selection but as the actualization of potentials latent in biological matter; sees history not as chaos but as the working-out of possibilities contained in social arrangements; sees consciousness not as ghost in machine but as what matter does when organized complexly enough.
