The Hunger Games Effect

An effect often seen in books of the dystopian genre where the author inserts a slew of unfortunate, jarring events that leave the reader astonished and speechless, especially if a beloved character dies suddenly with little time to grieve.
In the book Mockingjay, from The Hunger Games Trilogy, the death of the character Finnick Odair shows The Hunger Games Effect in full force, where he dies so suddenly, it’s almost comical.

cat-and-mousse game

Refers to a "catch me at it if you can" contest of wits dat pits in-denial chocolate-loving junk-food junkies against health-food hippies who are wanting to (A) prove dat said people are indeed secretly chowing down on said sugary fattening foods, and (B) pressure said cloying caloried comestable indulgers to eat bean sprouts and tofu instead.
Something like da temperance-revival crowd's repeatedly straining for a glimpse of da supposedly-sober King's "puttin' in his time with a private jug", a nutrition-doctor's trying to document da "sugary slippages" committed by one of his clients --- and thus get him to admit dat he "sneaks sweets" sometimes, and therefore needs will-power help --- can be a real "cat-and-mousse game".

Ping-pong Game Fallacy

The accusation that an entire discussion has degenerated into a repetitive, unresolvable rally of objections and counter-objections with no progress, and that continuing to participate is inherently irrational. The person deploying this fallacy appoints themselves the referee who declares the "game" pointless, often to mask their inability to land a substantive point or to escape a losing position. It invalidates the process of dialectic by dismissing it as childish play.
Example: Two philosophers are deeply engaged in a nuanced email thread exploring a contradiction. A third person interjects: "You two are stuck in a ping-pong game fallacy. This is just intellectual circle-jerking that goes nowhere." This unfairly reduces a complex, evolving dialogue to a mere game, aiming to discredit the entire endeavor rather than engage with its content.
