Schrodinger's compliment

When a girl compliments a guy and he has to figure out if she is flirting or just being nice, leaving the compliment in duel state of both an act of friendship and of flirting until the guy asks.
What's wrong with him?
My boy got hit with Schrodinger's compliment and now he's having a crisis.

spring-roll compliment

spring-roll compliment: n. a compliment suspiciously wrapped. Unaccepted compliment due to cautious distrust of someone or something.
It didn't really matter, it was a spring-roll compliment anyway

backhanded compliment

An insult disguised as a compliment
"No, honey...I love yours. I don't even like them big."
"Relax, sweetie...you were perfectly adequate."
"Your haircut really slims your face."
Since Michael is a pompous prick, I think I'll give him a backhanded compliment.

French compliment

A statement phrased like a compliment that is actually more condescending than flattering, generally coming from a beautiful French woman.
"You speak French very well, for an American."

"I just love the way you embrace your round figure when you dance."

"You must have a fantastic metabolism. I would never be able to eat such a big dessert."

"How daring of you to wear such a lively color."

"Marie just told me my bag was 'interesting.' I'm pretty sure that was a French compliment."

To Fish for a Compliment

When you are mentioning something you did, something you are wearing, etc. to make someone else give you a compliment for it.
The following are examples of "To Fish for a Compliment":

Her: Oh, I'm so tired of baking. These cinnamon rolls took me all day to make.
Him: And they sure do taste wonderful!
Her: I guess I fished for that compliment.

One girl to her friend: I was so lucky to get this sweater on sale last Thursday.
The friend: It looks great on you!

Husband: Man, I'm tired of changing tires on all our cars.
Wife: Thank you so much for doing it. I really appreciate it.

Open-Faced Compliment Sandwich

When you receive criticism followed by an insincere compliment, usually at a job review. Done when someone gets so upset after criticism that they are pacified with a "compliment" in order to shut them up.
Chris was mad because his job review was terrible, so his boss made up a random compliment to make him feel better. Chris did not fall for this Open-Faced Compliment Sandwich and remained angry. Grrr.
