A subgenre that seems to be widely misinterpreted and unrecognized, it is encompassed by liturature, film, and music.
Southern Gothic inspiration arises from the macabre, politically incorrect and disturbing side of the American South, exclusively exposing the flawed nature of Southern society. The popularity of the subgenre peaked in the 1940's - 1950's, although it made first appearances much earlier in works of literature by famous writers such as Edgar Allen Poe, William Faulkner, and Nathaniel Hawthorne.
Events that may unfold when indulging in Literature and film:
• Environmental decay, disturbing and mentally unbalanced characters, political tyranny, small town poverty, murder, and other events involving death.
Southern Gothic music (Gothic Americana) displays a mixture of Alternative, Country/Folk, Southern Rock and sometimes Bluegrass. Lyrical Inspiration arises from similar events found in Southern Gothic literature:

A deliberate insult said to a person's face by a Southerner who is thought to be giving high praise, but is in fact thoroughly insulting the person. The slam is said in a heavy Southern drawl so as to fool the person into thinking you are stupid.
Example 1:
Upon seeing a woman approach wearing a hideous dress:
Southern Slammer: "Where eva did you get that dress? I simply must know. It takes my breath away!
Loosely translated: "That is the fugliest dress I have ever seen. I want to know where you got it so I can avoid that store like the plague!"

Popular shoe brands are Sperry Top-Sider, Cole Haan, Johnston and Murphy, and Clarks. Popular sunglasses worn by Southern gents are Ray Ban wayfarers and club masters, and Costa Del Mar fathoms, brines, stringers, and harpoons, topped off with croakies from their favorite brand. This style is the perfect balance of classy good looks, and laid back casualness. The proper Southern man is a well-dressed example of the confidence that is seen throughout the South, and is a symbol of esteem and success everywhere.
