Heavy Metal

Contrary to about 400 of the definitions already listed here, Heavy Metal has nothing to do with Marilyn Manson. Heavy Metal is a genre of music inspired by American Blues music, in which people began to exploit the characteristics of the electric guitar to create louder, more discordant sounds. Heavy Metal is characterized by fast tempo, agressive rythm, and grandoise lyrics, often involving such themes as drug abuse, death, or political issues.

Metal Gear Rising

A Metal Gear game loved by some fans but not all, mostly due to the game not surrounding Snake, but surrounding a badass cyborg samurai dude with white hair who somehow stops time to slice you into tiny bits while very loud and good music plays in your ears.

Person 1: "Metal Gear Rising sucks. It's a complete change and the protagonist is not even that cool."

Person 2: "Okay, but can you beat the games OST?"

Person 1: "Fuck."

progressive metal

Prog metal for short. A sub genre of music that combines the almost jazz-like progression of progressive rock and the agression, volume, speed, and heaviness of metal. Usually features band members who are incredibly skilled at their instruments. Features rapid key changes, odd time signatures, and bombastic instrumental sections. It could be defined as "intelligent metal".

Rapid changes in key are a characteristic of progressive metal.

Melodic Death Metal

Possibly one of the greatest Sub-Genres in all of Heavy Metal. It combines the brutality, low guitar and bass tunings, complex and fast drumming, guttural vocals (while usually higher pitched than in normal Death Metal) with focus more on melody and harmony more than brutality. Electric guitars typically have complex rhythm, structure and riffs to them and combine low riffing, palm muting and power chords with "mini-solo" like parts that involve higher notes and odd note groupings. The genre started in the early 90's and has spanned from there. Some great/notable bands including a song are:

Metallicar

A black '67 Chevy Impala driven by Dean Winchester in the show Supernatural. It is called the 'Metallicar' because of Dean's love for rock music and the group Metallica. It is only called the Metallicar by true fans of the show. The Metallicar met it's demise in the final episode of season 1. It was hit and ultimatly destroyed by a 18 wheeler driven by a demon possesed driver.
Quotes pertaining to the Metallicar:

SAM:Iswear dude, you gotta update your cassette collection.
DEAN:Why?
SAM:Well for one there cassettes and two Black Sabbath,Motorhead and Metallica. It's the greatest hits of mullet rock.
