FTW can be used 3 ways,

1. Fuck the world, usually said when extremely depressed or very happy but at total disregard of whatever anybody else thinks about it.

2. For the win, usually said after describing an action which will have great results on the situation.

3. Somthing like for the win, but as an adjective, usually describing something awesome.

1. Matt: Dude, Caroline was killed by flying ninja monkeys. I'm so sorry.

Max: FTW!!!!!!

2.Matt: HOLY SHIT ITS A FUCKING HELICOPTER RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!!

FTW 

One of those TLAs that originate loooooong before the internets. Has been used in Cricket since time immemorial, meaning "for the win," typically in a context where the statistically expected winner is being named, often in journalism or in a telegram. Cricket matches may last over several days, hence several editions of a newspaper.

Since the internet, or _post reticulon_ (PR) it has come to be associated with a number of other meanings that you can explore on Urban Dictionary.
