Gutterball

A disappointment or missed opportunity; an effort which leads to complete failure. The term is frequently utilized to infer unconditional defeat, or in describing feelings of resigned, chronic dispair. As in bowling, there can be a prolonged experience of knowing the failure has occurred but take some brief moments to conclude (the ball may roll to the gutter at the top of the lane), and lumber to miss any bowling pins at length.
