A mechanism, task or object used to separate people that are of high quality or ability from those that are not - to proverbially "separate the wheat from the chaff". Most commonly used to describe bosses/levels in singleplayer/co-op games, but can be used in real life too.

playing a co-op computer game
"This wave (6/10) is way too hard. Only teams with real good teamwork and communication can seem to pass it."
"Yup, it's a real noob filter."

after an exam
"How was the paper?"
"I think it was alright, I just couldn't do questions 3, 6 and 8."

Filter episode

A 'filter episode' is an episode in a series that doesn't quite add anything to the storyline or have anything to do with the main plot. It is merely an episode that appears to be something to lengthen the series, or an episode that is used because the producers have run out of ideas and do not want the story to conclude just yet.

Example 1:
Jeff: "Dude, yesterdays episode was crap! It didn't even mention what happened last week!"
Ken: "Must've been a filter episode"

Example 2:
Stacey: "Ugh, another filter episode! When are they going to continue the story?!"

filter artist

A person who takes pictures, runs them through a filter in Photoshop, and calls it their art. They generally mass-produce pictures this way without any talent whatsoever. A shame to real artists everywhere.

"Look! I took this photo of a tree and made it so it looks like I drew it! It's art! I'm awesome!"

1. When one is so wasted that their filter (liver and kidneys) are in fact fucked. Persistent states of filter fucked can result in Keith Richards like bodily function or the lack thereof bearing the need for dialysis.

2. When you have embibed so much alcohol that you light the wrong end of your cigarette.

3. When the filter between your brain and your mouth fails to function.

Filter Biscuit

1) A person using too many filters on their pictures, to the point they don't even look like themselves in real life.

2) A polite way of calling someone real life ugly.
