When someone deliberately burns a source of help (an employee, friend, etc.) out of spite or stupidity. Similar to burning a bridge, this happens when someone is so short-sighted, they don't realize the effect their negative actions will have on their lives and the lives of others.

I wonder what Jeanne is going to do for computer help now that she fired Alex for no reason whatsoever. Man, she really torpedoed the lifeboat.
