Old US military slang for garbled audio in AM communications. Also adopted by civilian AM radio operators to describe the same phenomena. In common usage from 1940s to about 1980s.

I could barely make out his message for all of the mipping and mupping.

Muscles in progress. As opposed to saying you are ripped, you are mipped. Used when you are just starting to work out.
