Used when everything finally seems to be going right for you and then wham! your special lady friend (who was on the pill at the time, of course) gets pregnant and you get hit with a lawsuit the size of Tom Cruise's ego. Or y'know, just whenever something crap happens to you.

Named after Jude, the patron saint of lost causes. St. Jude's is a Children's Research Hospital for children with terminal illnesses. The hospital rehabilitates children without any cost to them and has saved many lives.
