Metal Gear Solid

Also MGS.

The latter half of the Metal Gear video game series published by Konami and produced by rockstar director Hideo Kojima. Includes Metal Gear Solid (PSOne, later remade and published on the Gamecube as Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes), Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (PS2, later rereleased with extra non-story missions on the PS2 and Xbox as Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance), and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2).

The first MGS innovated a style of gameplay that would eventually lead to the explosion of the stealth genre (which would include well-noted titles such as Splinter Cell), which focused on avoiding enemies through stealth rather than engaging them in combat. MGS2 further developed the gameplay of its predecessor by adding new ways of navigating environments, as well as the ability to aim weapons in a first-person view.

All titles in the series are extremely story-heavy, and are notable for their graphic quality which is often years ahead of most other games, well-directed cutscenes, exceptional voice acting, and controversial postmodern concepts.

The series is generally regarded as one of the best ever produced in video gaming, and competes with efforts such as Ico as the most artistically relevent title to come out of the fledgeling genre.

metagaming

When game information outside of what is available in a game is used to give a player an advantage in-game. Most commonly seen and frowned upon in many forms of role playing especially when consent has not been given.
Example a.

A dungeons and dragons adventure team comes across an unknown monster in-game. The metagamer knows this monster through out-of-game information. Using this information, the metagamer's character acts upon the monster's weaknesses and attributes despite the character having never seen the monster before.

Example b.

In an online pan-fandom RPG, Ryoga from Ranma 1/2 meets Ken from Street Fighter for the first time and they have a fight to the death. Ken finds some water in a random nearby bucket and dumps it on Ryoga, then proceeds to pummel the life out of Ryoga who is now transformed into a tiny black pig because of his water curse.

In this case, Ken's role player is metagaming.

Thrash metal

A subgenre of metal music, considered by many to be the original extreme metal genre. It essentially began as a derivative of speed metal, played by bands like Motorhead and Overkill. Thrash metal took the high speed aspect of such bands, and added NWOBHM influenced melodies, and more progressive elements to the music.

Thrash metal's origins trace back to the early 1980's, and San Fransisco is considered the birthplace of most of the thrash greats. Thrash metal bands include Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Testament, Exodus, Kreator, etc. It has proved to be very influential to almost every metal style that has come about since it's inception, and has experienced somewhat of a popularity revival in recent years.
Dude 1: *Slayer playing in the background* Man, Thrash metal fucking owns! what the hell happened to bands like this?

Dude 2: Uh, I'm going to go see Megadeth in 2 weeks..

Dude 1: ...You bastard!

metalmaiden

A female who is in to metal music in a big way. The female version of a metalhead.

A metalmaiden rejects the mainstream and doesnt care about whats trendy or popular. This applies to all areas of her life.

She listens to all sorts of metal OR specific branches of metal than can include - traditional metal, black metal, power metal, thrash metal, death metal, doom metal, symphonic metal, viking metal, industrial metal and progressive metal.

She wears what she wants. Included in this is - band t-shirts (both guy and girl shirts), big boots, jeans, comando pants, short skirts, spiked collars/braclets, painted nails, lots of jewellery, lots of make-up and generally has long hair of various colours (natural and unatural) and can have tattoos.

Generally she is opinionated and has a strong personality. This comes from hanging around metalheads all day and having to stand-up for herself to be heard. She generally gets along with guys better than other women although when she meets fellow metal maidens (not groupie-whores! or false-metal chicks!) she can form lasting friendships.

NOT to be confused with a groupie!
Metalhead: "Fuck! That Iron Maiden concert rocked!"

Metalmaiden: "Yep - It was fucken awesome! I really loved that they played lots from Powerslave. That's my fuckin favourite!"

MH: "Yep - that was fuckin sweet!"

MM: "Cumon, let's go get a beer and discuss the whole concert song by song. I wanna get a t-shirt on the way out"
