Ordering the most expensive meal on the menu, on the firm's/company's tab, when one is forced to dine at their desk on a Friday evening.

PARTNER: "Harris, can you stay late to finish this brief? Dewey Cheatum & Howe will pay for dinner."

ASSOCIATE 1: "Sure. I'll have the lobster."

ASSOCIATE 2: "Yes! Punitive Dining!"

Dining at the Y

Humorous way to allude to the kind of menu you will be having for tonite's dinner. You will probably choose some tuna taco , or perhaps bearded clam or maybe loose meat sandwich or even some snapper.
For those who need further explanation, the diner is called the Y not because its in some gym, but due to the peculiar shape of all aforementioned dishes.

dumpster dining

The art of saving good food from dumpsters. It helps to have inside knowledge of exactly when specific items are dumped from each restaurant or store. Results in being able to regularly eat relatively fresh seafood, meats, baked goods, fruits and veggies.

Joe has been homeless around here for years, and he's an expert at dumpster dining. Almost every day for him, it's a smorgasbord.

distracted dining

Diverted attention while eating either solo or with others. May occur in a private residence, or at a restaurant or public event. Minor distractions may include obnoxious people in the vicinity; major disturbances may include medical or police emergencies.

I had a distracted dining experience last Thanksgiving. My sister's baby wouldn't stop crying and fussing.

A guy collapsed in the cafeteria the other day. We had to call paramedics. It was definitely distracted dining.
