Word coined in 1943 by the Jewish historian Raphael Lemkin to describe the atrocities commited against the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire. It is coined from the root words genos (Greek for family, tribe or race) and -cide (Latin for killing). He first used the word in print in Axis Rule in Occupied Europe: Laws of Occupation - Analysis of Government - Proposals for Redress (1944).

Before World War II, Lemkin was interested in the Armenian Genocide and campaigned in the League of Nations to ban what he called "barbarity" and "vandalism".

Assyrian Genocide

A war crime that wiped out nearly all Assyrians on the planet. It was carried out by the Ottoman Empire on the Assyrians, a Christian minority group who lived in modern day Iraq. The Ottomans blamed Christian minorities for conspiracy with the allied powers, and proceeded to attempt to wipe out the entire Greek, Armenian, and Assyrian population, and nearly succeeded. While Greeks and Armenians are still plentiful today because many of them lived in neighboring countries, thus safe from the genocide, Assyrians were located entirely in the Ottoman Empire, and thus, up to 80% of them died. Assyrians had their villages burned, Churches destroyed, and belongings stolen by Ottoman soldiers. Then, they were led on a march to nowhere, where most of them died. If you somehow survived that, it would be forced labor for men and possible rape for women.

Despite all of this, Turkey still refuses to admit that the Assyrian genocide and the others were crimes against humanity, insisting they were necessary to save the empire from espionage.

A genocide counter is the name for the units of mass genocide. The amounts are as follows:

1 Hitler = 6,000,000 deaths
1 World War 1 = 40,000,000 deaths
1 World War 2 = 80,000,000 deaths
1 Nagasaki = 70,000 deaths
1 Hiroshima = 140,000 deaths

1 World War 2 = 2 World War 1s
1 Hiroshima = 2 Nagasakis

Guy 1: “Did you hear about that mass genocide?”
Guy 2: “Yeah, I hear it was 3 Nagasakis on the Genocide Counter!”
Guy 1: “I know right! What’s that, 1 and a half Hiroshimas?”

Velvet Genocide

Velvet Genocide is caused by unlawful policies that are enforced to make people comply. It is when a policy does more harm than good and ruins millions of lives.

People who openly oppose the unlawful policy, and protest it, are targeted and profiled.

The Controlled Substance Act is creating a "Velvet Genocide" It ruins millions of lives, and even causes lives to be lost. Yet certain sects of our government who profit off of it, will lie to maintain the status-quot at our expense.
